THE CHALLENGE

How might the text of an interview between April Greiman and Josh Smith be creatively published while adhering to constraints?

THE SOLUTION

A custom grid for each book specifically designed with its given constraints in mind.

In the first book I used only one typeface in one size. Therefore, the biggest challenge was differentiating the two speakers. I structured the grid to keep the speakers' initials central to the page.

The unconventional layout captures a bit of Greiman's spirit, despite the typographic limitations.

A second typeface and looser size restraints were introduced in the second book. I utilized a simple grid to allow vertical movement of the initals, which became the focal point in this edition.

The body content anchors to the same place on every page. The initials, on the other hand, become a kind of visual confetti while still remaining functional.

In the third book, color and images of Greiman's work were added. I used the loosest grid in this edition to let the text fall wherever the image suggested.

The text stays understated in order to let Greiman's work take center stage.
